calmbirth® is a unique childbirth education program developed by, midwife Peter Jackson, assisting couples to create a calm, joyful and even ecstatic birth experience.
Relaxation techniques are the key to the calmbirth® approach, as well as understanding the link between the mind and body.
Central Coast calmbirth® teaches pregnant couples a variety of techniques and skills, including:
Central Coast calmbirth® offers those who attend, the opportunity to dismantle the fear, stress and anxiety which may be experienced by women during pregnancy and childbirth allowing them be in tune with the natural energy and rhythm of her baby’s birth.
It is recommended that you attend a calmbirth® is anywhere from 20 – 35 weeks of pregnancy so you are able to gain the maximum benefit from the relaxation and breathing techniques but you can also have a very successful outcome right up to 38 weeks. Beginning the course earlier in your pregnancy will give you a greater opportunity to practice the skills learnt and more opportunities to connect with your baby whilst experiencing the benefits of relaxation.
Many believe if a mother feels calm and confident during her pregnancy then she is giving her baby the best opportunity to be a calm and confident human being.
It is suggested to book with Central Coast calmbirth® as soon as you have decided which class you would like to attend as all classes are kept to a maximum of 3 couples and tend to book out quite quickly.
Due to limited availability, private classes also book very quickly therefore it is advisable to make your private booking as quickly as possible.
Partners or Support Partners are invited and encouraged to attend the classes as their support is an integral part of the birth. Attending the course will allow them to understand the techniques that are taught, enabling them to assist the birthing mother and help her to maintain her focus. Many birthing mums report they feel more secure and better supported when their partners understand the whole process, allowing them to work together as a team. Many partners come away from the classes feeling confident and looking forward to their role.
Group classes are limited to a maximum of 3 couples per group allowing time for discussion and sharing. Each couple will be pampered in a friendly atmosphere and are given the opportunity to connect with each other once their course has finished.
Many couples prefer private classes for a variety of reason therefore Central Coast calmbirth® offers private classes for mothers and partners who wish to have more flexibility in the content or are unable to attend at other times.
The calmbirth® program is a unique childbirth education course offering information and techniques that are not taught in the hospital or birth centre run programs. Whether this is your first, fourth or sixth birth, you will gain practical knowledge and skills which are very different from what is presented in a hospital or birth centre antenatal class. Central Coast calmbirth® encourages all couples to be as informed as possible and whilst many couples are comfortable with attending a calmbirth® alone, many also choose to attend both.
Hypnobirthing® was founded in the United States by hypnotherapist, Marie Mongan and was introduced to Australia in 1990 by Peter Jackson, an Australian Midwife with over 30 years of experience. HypnoBirthing® focuses on teaching couples techniques of self hypnosis techniques so they are able to achieve a satisfying birth free of the fear.
Peter Jackson left the HypnoBirthing® Institute in the USA in 2004 and took time to write his own program which he named “calmbirth®”. The calmbirth® program was written to support Australian mothers and is not an Australian version of Hyponobirthing®
calmbirth® promotes the use of deep relaxation which is centred around the normal physiological relaxation response within the body which has been based on Dr Herbert Benson’s extensive research into what he terms the Relaxation Response.
Although both programs cover a little of the same content, such as Conscious Parenting, Bonding and Attachment, they draw on different sources of reference and research.

The calmbirth® techniques are complementary to all models of care whether you have chosen to have your baby in a private or public hospital, in a birth centre or at home.
Each woman attending a class with Central Coast calmbirth® will receive a letter to pass onto her health carer, explaining the techniques used and how they can assist a mother to achieve her goal of having a calm birth.
Each woman’s personal experience of birth is a unique process and the sensations experienced during labour and birth are varied for each woman.
Labour and birth are described by women in a variety different ways and are often affected by many factors. For some it is described as “painful”, some describe it as “an intense and powerful process” and for others it is “an empowering experience.”
The goal of Central Coast calmbirth® is to offer you new understanding, and knowledge about childbirth by providing you with information, techniques and resources that will assist you in birthing your baby in the most calm and joyful way possible. New knowledge will also help you to face any challenges that may arise during your labour and assist you to go as far as possible without the use of medicated pain relief.
Of course you can! The techniques used by a calmbirth® mum will not interfere with any of the pain relief methods used whether it is natural, such as heat or sterile water injections or otherwise. In fact should you require more medicated support, you will find the calmbirth® techniques will help to manage any discomfort or fear surrounding your chosen method of pain relief.
